Book ConsultationInverted nipples — also known as retracted nipples — occur when the nipple sits flat or is drawn inward rather than projecting outward. This condition can affect one or both nipples and may cause self-consciousness, discomfort, or breastfeeding difficulties
At iQonic Aesthetics, our nipple correction treatment is tailored to restore a natural, outward projection while maintaining sensitivity and symmetry. The goal is to achieve a refined aesthetic result with minimal downtime and discreet scarring.
Nipple inversion can be congenital (present from birth) or develop later in life. Common causes include:
Your iQonic surgeon will determine the cause and grade of inversion (from mild to severe) during consultation to recommend the best approach.
Your journey begins with an in-depth consultation using Adoreal’s Silhouette tool and a detailed clinical assessment. Our specialist surgeon will assess the degree of inversion, discuss your concerns and goals, and design a bespoke surgical plan that aligns with your anatomy and expectations.
Performed under local anaesthesia, the surgery usually takes 30–60 minutes. Through a small incision at the base of the nipple, the surgeon gently releases the tethered ducts or fibrous tissue holding the nipple inward. In some cases, delicate sutures are used to stabilise projection while preserving nerve pathways and, when possible, lactation capability.
You’ll be welcomed into our modern, calming environment. Our surgical team ensures you are comfortable, informed, and fully supported throughout your procedure. Because it is minimally invasive, you’ll typically return home the same day.
You’ll spend a short time in recovery before returning home. Mild swelling, sensitivity, or tightness are normal and subside within days. A light dressing and soft support bra may be applied to protect the area.
Your aftercare includes scheduled appointments, ultrasound-guided assessments, and 24/7 access to your care team through Adoreal. Detailed home-care instructions will guide you through wound care, dressing changes, and when to resume daily routines.
Over the following 4–6 weeks, the nipples gradually settle into a stable, natural projection. Scars soften and fade over several months. Your surgeon will continue to monitor your progress to ensure lasting, balanced results.
At iQonic, aftercare is as important as the procedure itself — our support continues for months and years after your surgery to protect and maintain your results.
Inverted nipple correction (also termed inverted nipple surgery or flat nipple treatment) is a procedure designed to release the tethering tissue or shortened ducts pulling the nipple inward, thereby restoring natural projection. During the surgery, our surgeons will free the restricting fibres, reposition the nipple and if needed support it internally to maintain outward projection.
Suitable candidates are those who: have nipples that retract inward (flat or inverted) and feel self-conscious, uncomfortable or have functional concerns such as breastfeeding difficulty; have healthy breast tissue and realistic expectations; understand the potential effect on breastfeeding and sensation; are in good general health, and the procedure is conducted in an appropriate private UK facility. Sudden nipple inversion or new changes (such as discharge or lumps) must be assessed by a GP or breast specialist.
Inverted nipple classification helps determine treatment approach: Grade 1 : mild inversion, nipple can be everted manually or projects with stimulation. Grade 2 : moderate inversion, deeper but can be temporarily pulled out. Grade 3 : severe inversion, rarely projects, often requires surgical release. The grade matters because more advanced cases (Grade 2–3) generally require surgical correction to achieve lasting projection.
Some techniques are specifically designed to preserve milk ducts and aim to maintain or restore breastfeeding capability. However, overall success varies and there are no guarantees — our surgeons will assess your individual anatomy, the technique used, and your breastfeeding priorities.
While the procedure is typically safe when performed by a specialist, possible risks include: infection, bleeding or delayed wound healing; changes in nipple sensation (temporary or permanent); visible scarring or asymmetry; potential impact on future breastfeeding depending on technique used; small risk of recurrence (inversion returning) if proper internal support is not established; Your surgeon will review all risks, based on your grade of inversion, anatomy and treatment plan.
Typically: The procedure is performed as a day-case (you return home the same day). Light daily activity: ~2-3 days. Return to non-strenuous work: often around 1 week (depending on job). Avoid upper-body heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for ~2-3 weeks to protect healing tissues. Your specific timeline may vary depending on whether the surgery was combined with other breast procedures.
Thanks to modern surgical techniques, scarring is usually minimal and well concealed along the areola-junction. Most patients achieve stable nipple projection with natural appearance, and studies report high satisfaction when the correct technique is matched to the grade of inversion. Long-term surveillance shows that recurrence is low when internal support is properly established.
Maintaining nipple sensation is a key consideration. Many modern techniques aim to preserve nerve pathways, and significant loss of sensation is uncommon. Some temporary altered sensation or heightened sensitivity is possible during healing. Your surgeon will explain sensory risk , especially if ducts or internal tissue are divided. At iQonic, we minimise risks, ensuring your safety remains the top priority
Yes — while inverted nipple correction is more commonly sought by women (often due to aesthetic or breastfeeding concerns), the condition can affect men and surgical correction is applicable. The safety profile remains strong when a certified plastic surgeon treats the condition in appropriate facilities. Nonetheless, every case is individual and a full consultation is essential.
I had the MIA procedure with Adrian at the end of August and it has changed my life! Hardly any pain or recovery post op which was really important to me with two young children.
From the initial consultation to post procedure I am very pleased with my choice to go ahead. I can’t recommend Iqonic enough!
I had a great experience at iqonic aesthetics. Dr Arnaout was very knowledgeable and professional and helped me make a decision on the right treatment for me. I appreciated the great after care and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Iqonic to anyone!
